Cosmetic Dentistry: What’s the Excitement?

Cosmetic Dentistry in Vancouver, Washington

As you flip through the pages of the magazines and look at celebrities, you can often tell that they have had cosmetic dentistry done because their smile is just too perfect. You might wonder why they would have these procedures done. What’s the need and why would they voluntarily go to the dentist? The truth is there are many procedures that can be done with very little invasiveness and yet have great results. In fact, cosmetic dentistry is becoming common among the “common folk,” not just the celebrities. There are many procedures to choose from, but the most common are dental veneers, dental bonding, and dental implants.

Dental Veneers

For those patients that have a gap in their teeth, stained teeth that cannot be helped with tooth whitening, or slightly misaligned teeth, dental veneers can make a world of difference. These pieces of porcelain simply lay over the front of your enamel, giving the illusion that your teeth are perfectly aligned and without stains. This procedure is the least invasive cosmetic dentistry procedure as it requires no anesthesia and no recovery time. The process is completed in two appointments as molds need to be taken in order to have the proper veneers created, but the appointments are simple and quick, giving you a beautiful smile that will last for many years to come.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a little different from dental veneers. It does the same thing as veneers, such as closing a gap, hiding stains, or fixing a misalignment, but it is done with a resin material rather than porcelain. Dental bonding is like a filling on the front of the tooth. The bonding is made to look just like the color of your surrounding teeth and is then shaped to meet the same shape of your other teeth. When the process is complete, you are left with a beautiful smile. What you need to know, however, is that dental bonding is much more fragile than any other cosmetic dental procedure. Dental bonding should not be used on teeth that are going to be used for excessive chewing as the bonding would not last.

Dental Implants

Replacing missing teeth is a cosmetic and restorative dentistry procedure. Sometimes it is done to replace a defective or unpleasant tooth, but oftentimes it is to replace a tooth that is already missing. Dental implants are better looking than dentures because they are a permanent part of the mouth that are made to look exactly like your other teeth. Because the implant is surgically placed in the jaw line it is made to look as natural as possible. Anyone that did not know that you had an artificial tooth would never be able to tell.

Cosmetic dentistry today is just as much about restoration as it is the looks of your mouth. Dental veneers, bonding and dental implants all play an important role in your oral health.
